Waterproofing in Saint Bernard School

The current building is the result of a modern remodeling of the old Saint Bernard Hospital, which was the first and the only hospital in Gibraltar. The first building dates from 1567 and since the British occupation had several repairs and reconstructions. It still retains on its facade main vestiges of its reconstruction in 1882. The building was expanded with two wings in the 1950s and 1970s.

The school is considered the best equipped in Gibraltar, it houses sixteen secondary classrooms, a library, a thematic rooms, a sports court, an indoor pavilion, an auditorium and an underground parking.

JBS Gibraltar Ltd., main contractor, has our specialized services to propose solutions to the waterproofing of parking, roofs and some additional buildings.

First, a retaining wall and a loss of concrete must be waterproofed, acting in both cases on the external surface exposed to the ground. We proposed as a solution a system based on a PVC membrane: Sikaplan WP 1100-15 HL due to its suitability to protect the structures by resisting the aggressions of the subsoil. Its compartmentalized design reduces the risk of loss of tightness due to membrane damage. The system is proven as the most reliable and durable, exceeds 50 years sometimes in very aggressive conditions.

For the upper roofs we proposed an FPO membrane because we wanted to achieve a complete tightness resistant to ultraviolet light, intense wind from the area, pollution and other atmospheric agents: Sarnafil TG 76-15 Felt. With the FPO we achieve a very durable waterproofing, without plasticizers that migrate or discolor and also to have better aesthetic finish we use an adhered system.

Finally we had to waterproof the podium that distributes the access to the building and that is also the cover of the lower parking lot. We purposed a system based on a polyurethane with MTC technology: Sikalastic-621 TC. It is the first class of polyurethane. It cures driven by moisture and during the process does not release CO2 in contact with water, so it resists moisture much better, even resists rain within a few minutes of application.
